Directions: practice the following conversations with a partner.
.Conversation 1: Calling a child’s school
A: Ring! Ring!
B: Hello, you have reached Alpine academy. This is Carol. How may I
help you?
A: Hi, my name is Eleanor Wright. I am calling to inform you that my
child is sick and will not be in school today.
B: What is your child’s name?
A: Anna Wright.
B: How do you spell that?
A: Anna is spelled A-N-N-A, and Wright is spelled W-R-I-G-H-T.
B: Thank you. What grade is Anna in?
A: She is in second grade.
B: And what is her teacher’s name?
A: Mr. Roberts
B: All right. Thank you for calling.
A: You’re welcome.
B: Goodbye.
A: Okay bye.
Conversation 2: Wrong numbers and right numbers
A. Ring! Ring!
B. Hello?
A. Hi, this is Nidia. Is Sherri there?
B. I’m sorry. You have the wrong number.
A. Is this 555-5024?
B. No, it isn’t.
A. Oh, I’m sorry.
A. Ring! Ring!
C. Hello?
A. Hi, this is Nidia. Is Sherri there?
C. No, she isn’t.
A. Oh okay. Do you know if she went to the mall already? I was
supposed to meet her there.
C. Yes, she just left.
A. Okay I will go to meet her then.
C. Okay that sounds good. I hope you find her there.
A. Oh, thank you.
C. No problem. Goodbye.
A. Goodbye.
Conversation 3: Going to the Beach
A: Hi Chen. How are you?
B: Fine. How are you doing Lisa?
A: Fine. I have been working a lot lately and need a break.
B: Yes, I have been working hard lately too.
A: Well, I was wondering if you would like to come to the beach with me
this weekend.
B: Yes, that sounds great! Is it okay if my brother and sister come also?
A: Yeah, that’s fine. I was going to ask them if they wanted to come
anyway!
B: Oh, okay great. I think we should leave Friday after work. How does
5:00 sound to you?
A: Leaving at 5:00 sounds fine. We should be ready by then.
B: Okay, I will pick you up from your house at 5:00. I think we should
take one car to save gas.
A: Yes, I think that is a good idea. I am excited to go to the beach this
weekend!
B: So am I!
A: Okay, I will talk to you later.
B: Okay, bye.
A: Bye.
Conversation 4: Telemarketers
A: Ring! Ring!
B: Hello?
A: Hi, may I please speak to Andy Macintyre?
B: Yes, this is Andy speaking.
A: Andy, this is Terry Ortiz from Downtown Insurance Company.
How are you this evening?
B: Fine, thank you.
A: The reason I’m calling tonight is that we are offering
a new special policy that can save you a lot of money.
B: No thank you. I’m not interested.
A: Are you sure you do not want to take advantage of this one time offer?
B: Yes, I am sure.
A: All right. Thank you anyway.
B: Goodbye.
A: Goodbye.
(To stop a sales person from calling say “Please take me off of your list.” By
law the person must stop. She/he may explain that it will take three weeks to
remove your name from the list, but the conversation will be finished.)
Conversation 5: A Game of Basketball
A: Hi guys
B: Hey Sergio, what’s up?
A: Oh, not much. I’m bored.
C: Hey Sergio, if you are bored you should play a game of basketball
with us. We are just about to begin.
D: Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.
A: Well, okay. I’ll play, but I’m not very good.
B: That doesn’t matter. None of us are very good. Besides, we are just
playing for some exercise.
A: Okay cool.
C: There are four of us so we should play 2 on 2.
D: Yeah, that seems fair.
A: Let me put my athletic shoes on and I will be ready to go.
B: Okay, we will wait for you.
C: I am glad that we will finally have even teams!
D: This should be fun!
